Information resources on the Internet

Find information about general search engines, structured subject sites and gateways and other information resources at Finding information on the Internet. Some data services and gateways of particular interest to students and scholars in humanities disciplines are:

ADAM. The Art, Design, Architecture and Media Information Gateway, is a searchable catalogue or 2514 Internet resources that have been carefully selected and catalogued by professional librarians for the benefit of the UK Higher Education community.

AHDS (Arts and Humanities Database Service) collects, describes and preserves electronic resources in the humanities. Has information about and links to an interesting range of resources.

MHRA (Modern Humanities Research Association) supports humanities scholarship through publication of original work and bibliography and aids to scholarship in journal and in monograph.

Humanities in BUBL UK (British Bulletin Board for Libraries) is a directory of links to UK organisations and institutions including, amongst much else, central, regional and local government, political parties, churches, hospitals, museums, police, sports authorities and travel organisations.

The HUMBUL Gateway: International Resources for the Humanities provides a rich array of links to other gateways, search engines, bulletin boards and other Internet resources and initiatives. Also substantial lists and links to full-text databases and to electronic journals.

Some useful databases

ArticleFirst indexes 13,000 journals in all disciplines from 1900 to date. Many records include an abstract. (Access via FirstSearch)
Arts and Humanities Citation Index, accessed via Web of Science. Journal literature across the Arts and Humanities is indexed. It includes brief citations to each reference in the bibliography of every article indexed, searchable by name of first author cited.
BHI Plus is the CD-ROM version of the British Humanities Index covering traditional humanities subjects such as art, literature, music and history.
EDINA offers free access to the new digitised Statistical Accounts of Scotland.
MLA International Bibliography. Citations to critical documents on literature, language, linguistics and folklore from over 3.000 journals and series published worldwide. Also covers monographs, reference works and collections, including working papers, conference papers and proceedings.
Periodicals Contents Index contains information from the tables of contents of thousands of English and other European language journals in the humanities and social sciences.
Scotsman/Scotland on Sunday. Full text of the two Scottish newspapers from 1993 to June 1994 and 1995 to date. Accessed via CD-ROM network.
SCRAN is a searchable archive of Scotland's history and culture.
Social Sciences Citation Index. Accessed via Web of Science. Journal literature across the Social Sciences is indexed. It includes brief citations to each reference in the bibliography of every article indexed, searchable by name of first author cited.

Museums

Kilmartin House Museum. Over 5,000 years of human history are traced across the Kilmartin Valley. At least 150 prehistoric sites lie within 6 miles of the village of Kilmartin.

The National Monuments Record of Scotland provides a publicly accessible information service based on an extensive collection of photographs, maps, architectural drawings and plans, excavation records and documentary material relating to the archaeological sites, historic buildings and maritime sites of Scotland. The NMRS database, which is known as CANMORE, provides information on these sites and an index to the collections.

National Museums of Scotland. Museums include the Royal Museum and the Museum of Scotland, the Museum of Flight, Scottish Agricultural Museum, Shambellie House Museum of Costume, and the Scottish United Services Museum.

Flora Celtica Scotland 2000. People and Plants in Scotland. This is a Millenium project based at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, aiming to document and strengthen an important part of our culture - the use of native Scottish plants.
