The University of Edinburgh has decided to close its in-house facility, from 1 August 2009, as a result of the reduction in print journals acquired and the continual rise in the number of electronic journals taken by the University Library. In addition, it was discovered in 2007 that the cost of moving the Bindery operation to a new location as a result of the Main Library Redevelopment Project was prohibitive.
A number of alternative measures have been put in place, or are being finalised, to continue the services previously provided by the in-house Bindery.
