New College Library welcomes users engaged in bona fide research requiring
access to its holdings of archives, manuscripts and early printed books.
All readers must have a current library ticket/consultation card. Library
Online provides essential information on Admission, Registration and Access to the Library and
its collections. Further information on library access can be obtained
by contacting New College Library.
Visitors to Special Collections will also be asked to provide identification
and then to register as readers.Users from outside UK higher education
institutions should note that while there is no charge for access to Special
Collections material itself, the Library does apply a modest charge for
a library ticket/consultation card.
Users from outside the University are strongly advised to contact New
College Library in advance of their visit to discuss their needs,
and to ensure that the relevant material can be made available.

Requesting Special Collections items
Items are requested in the Library by completing a printed slips which are
available in the catalogue area. Items can also be requested in advance of
your visit by telephone, e-mail or letter. Special Collections items are collected
for users once each day. Requests received before 11am will be fetched the
same
day.
Requests
received after 11am will be available
the following day.
Enquiry services
New College Library Service Desk staff can help with routine enquiries and
advice. For more detailed advice, an appointment can be made with the New College
Librarian. Library staff will respond as appropriate to all enquiries, whether
made in person, by telephone, letter, fax or email, but cannot carry out detailed
research on behalf of readers or give general bibliographic advice on broad
subjects.
Charges may be imposed for certain categories of enquiry work or searches
done.

There is a self-service
facility for material in the General Collections, for which photocopy cards
can be purchased from the Service Desk.
New College
Library is able to offer in-house staffed photocopying and black
and white scanning service for loose leaf and unbound Special Collections
items. Acceptance of
photocopy orders (for which charges are levied) is solely at the discretion
of Library
staff
and will
be dependent on condition,
availability and copyright legislation. Copies may not be published without
written permission and reproduction
fee where appropriate.
Prices for Special Collections photocopying start at 15 pence per page.
All prices are exclusive of VAT. All orders must be paid for in
advance.We accept payment by cash and cheque. We regret that we
are unable to accept payment by credit or debit cards.
We aim to provide photocopies within three days of ordering, subject to
staff availability. Orders made on a Saturday morning will be treated as
having been made on the following Monday morning. Photocopying orders can
also be posted out, subject to an additional charge. Some postal requests
may be liable to a handling charge where staff time has been higher than
normal. Please note that we are unable to offer an on-demand photocopying
service.
Bound volumes in New
College Library Special Collections items must usually be photocopied
using specialist equipment at the Centre for
Research Collections. Full details of services and charges can be found
on the Centre
for Research Collections website. For large and heavy or particularly
valuable items, a handling charge for transporting the item to the
Digital Imaging Unit
may be
payable.
Orders
will be
dealt with promptly, but readers should allow at least 20 working days.
Please note that readers are not permitted to scan images of Special
Collections items themselves, without special permission from the Head
of Special Collections.

| Digital Imaging Services |
A wide range of digital imaging services is
offered by the Digital
Imaging Unit at the Main Library, including digital imaging, colour
copying, and printing from microfilm. Additional time must be allowed for
orders for these services to allow for the transit of Special Collections
items from New College Library to the Main Library.
Please note: Readers are not permitted to take photographs of
Special Collections items themselves, without special permission from
the Head of Special Collections.

| Permission to reproduce images from the
Library's Collections in publications |

Images are provided for private
study or non-commercial research, and cannot be used for other purposes unless
you request and receive written permission from New College Library to do so.
We retain rights over the images of items we own, and you will need permission
from us if you wish to reproduce images from our collections in:
- a book, journal or other printed publication
- a website, e-book or other electronic publication
- an exhibition panel, display poster or advertisement
- a television programme or recording
Our policy, procedures and charges follow the guidelines set by the University
of Edinburgh's Centre
for Research Collections which enquirers are advised to read.
Authors wishing to publish images from the New College Library collections
must use the high quality images provided by the Digital Imaging Unit at Edinburgh
University Library.
How to obtain permission to reproduce items from
New College Library's Collections
1. Authors must contact the New College Librarian in writing or by e-mail to
obtain permission. An Application to reproduce images
form must be completed. Download the Application to reproduce

2. A permission fee is charged for the reproduction of New College Library
images in publications. Details of permission fees can be found on the Centre for Research Collections website.
3.. Users will be charged for the reprographic work they have requested. Details

New College Library holds over 50,000 rare books in its
collections.
We call books rare if they are:
- Printed before 1850
- Only known to exist in a few copies
- Part of a named special collection, e.g. from the personal library
of a collector
- Found to have important manuscript annotations or marks of former
ownership (provenance)

principally focus on:
- Papers of significant individuals or groups
connected with New College 1843-1930 / Edinburgh University School
of Divinity 1930-
- Papers of significant individuals from the Church of Scotland /
Free Church of Scotland 1843-1930
- Papers of individuals or organisations significant to the religious
life of Scotland
The collections include the papers of Thomas Chalmers, J.H. Oldham and
James S. Stewart.

Other useful sources
Church records
Kirk session, presbytery and synod records for the Church of Scotland,
Free Church and other denominations are usually held by the National
Archives of Scotland . Some records are not held physically at the
NAS but in local archives under the charge and superintendence of the
Keeper of the Records of Scotland - if in doubt, contact the NAS.
Family records
Church of Scotland baptisms, marriages and burials are held by the General
Register Office for Scotland, although there are a small number of
records of baptisms for 1843-1860 held by the NAS.

New College Library does not hold transcripts of students' academic records.

New College Library maintains a New College Archive which contains class
photographs, student magazines and information relating to student societies.
This archive has an outline index only and it is not usually possible to
search it by name of student. Enquirers must visit the library to research
the collection themselves.
We regret that New College Library is unable to provide any contact information
for current or former students.
